One advantage to the more difficult route is that you have the opportunity to visit the hermitage Eremo delle Carceri. Such an amazing setting, literally hanging off the side of the mountain. It was a fascinating construction of heavy rocks with mysterious little alcoves and tunnels leading to tiny little rooms. A quiet place to remove yourself from the rest of the world. It was well worth the extra side trip off the regular path.
